FAQ

    Medical Cannabis

Cannabinoids are the main active ingredients in cannabis and more than 100 have been identified. They can be produced by the human body, found in plants, or manufactured in a laboratory for use in some prescription medications. The two most commonly discussed cannabinoids are THC and CBD.

Cannabinoids are the active compounds found within cannabis. The two most commonly discussed cannabinoids are THC and CBD.

THC (delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main active ingredient within cannabis. THC is responsible for many of the pharmacological effects of cannabis, including the psychoactive effect.

CBD (cannabidiol) is the second most prominent compound within cannabis. CBD is not known to cause the noticeable intoxicating, euphoric effects that THC does. In fact, it may help reduce these effects.

Terpography is a visual mapping tool that Spectrum Therapeutics designed to help customers choose the products that are right for them. The terpography map represents the profile of terpenes that give cannabis varieties and products distinct smells and tastes.

If your reaction is severe, call 911 and/or go to the nearest hospital. Notify your physician and contact the Spectrum Therapeutics Care Centre at your earliest convenience.

If you experience things like anxiety, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, or fainting, it is important that you don’t panic. You should focus on your breathing, stay hydrated, eat something, and find a safe place to relax. The effects should wear off in 2-6 hours depending on the method of consumption. If health and safety become a concern contact your prescribing healthcare professional immediately. Should you experience symptoms such as chest pain, or persistent vomiting or dizziness causing falls, you should go to a hospital emergency room.

To be effective, cannabinoids need to be heat-activated in a process called decarboxylation. This occurs during smoking or vapourizing when the plant matter is heated above 120℃. All Spectrum Therapeutics oil and softgels contain cannabis oil that has been decarboxylated.

The terms “indica” and “sativa” are botanical terms that describe the morphology (shape) of different cannabis plants, but they are also often used to characterize the range of possible effects from a variety of cannabis. Some people use the term “indica” to describe effects that are more sedating or physical in nature. Some people use the term “sativa” to describe effects that are more cerebral or energizing.

These terms can be a useful reference, but they are not scientifically valid.

    Medical Cannabis Products

Dried cannabis is typically offered as either dried whole flowers (“bud”) or milled (“prepared” or “ground”). Whole flowers from the female cannabis plant are harvested, the stem and leaves are trimmed, and then the flowers are dried to a specific moisture content.

Concentrated cannabis resin, containing cannabinoids and other active compounds, is extracted from cannabis flowers that have undergone thermal decarboxylation, then diluted with a food-grade carrier oil to make a product for you to take orally from a syringe. This allows you to know exactly how much THC and CBD you are taking in each dose.

Softgels are filled with cannabis resin dissolved in food-grade carrier oil. They offer you a convenient and discreet option for your medication.

When inhaling, the active ingredients are absorbed almost immediately into your bloodstream through the lungs, and the effects usually last 2-4 hours. If you want to inhale, we recommend using a vapourizer. A vapourizer heats cannabis without burning it so that the active compounds are released into a vapour for inhalation, minimizing exposure to the by-products from combustion. Smoking cannabis is not recommended.

It’s important that you start low, go slow when ingesting cannabis because the effects can be stronger and can last much longer than when inhaled. Spectrum Therapeutics oil can be taken directly from a syringe, measured according to the dosing insert that accompanies your product, or following the guidance of your healthcare professional. Taking the oil on its own makes it easy to consume in a precise dose.

Cannabis oil and softgels can take 1-3 hours or longer to start working, depending on your metabolism and things such as whether you have eaten before consuming the oil. The effects can last 6-8 hours or longer. This can be useful at night if longer relief is required. Some patients may take 2-3 doses per day, but it’s important to determine the correct single dose before taking more than 1 dose per day.

Cannabis oil and softgels are meant solely for ingestion and are NOT meant for inhalation nor for use in vapourizers.

Cannabis oil and softgels are meant solely for ingestion and are NOT meant for inhalation nor for use in vapourizers.

Concentrated resin, containing cannabinoids and other bioactive compounds, is extracted from cannabis flowers that have undergone thermal decarboxylation. The resin is diluted with a non-GMO food-grade oil to make a finished cannabis oil product that has a defined concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes. For simplified use and precise dosing, we include a syringe along with your bottle to facilitate oral administration.

Medical cannabis that is not in dried flower form is given an equivalency value by the Licenced Producer. When you buy medical cannabis, that equivalency value is deducted from your available authorized amount as stated in your medical document. We call this value Medical Allotment Deduction (MAD). The medical allotment calculation used by Spectrum Therapeutics is for the purpose of ensuring you have accurate information on the amount of medical cannabis available to you pursuant to your authorizing document across different formats and options as we expand our portfolio of available products. Products such as edibles, oils, creams, and vapes have a greater concentration of active ingredients of cannabis than flower does, so they are assigned a medical allotment deduction greater than their physical weight based on their concentration and cannabinoid content.

You may also see the term Dried Flower Equivalent, which is used in the recreational market for purposes of determining public possession limits - the amounts are different due to the dried flower equivalency (DFE) being based on the weight of cannabis for recreational cannabis

Your medical allotment is the amount of cannabis your Healthcare Professional has authorized for your use each month or for a different duration as provided in your authorizing document. Every time you order cannabis from us, an amount (the MAD) is deducted from your total available authorized amount. This ensures you stay within the authorized amount set out in your medical document. To check your medical allotment please refer to the communication provided by us when your registration became active.

    The convenience of spray bottles

Some of our oils come in convenient spray bottles to enhance portability and ensure delivery of the approximately the same dose every time.

Our priority is to ensure the best possible experience for our customers. This means continuing to work on innovative ways to deliver your medicine to you.

Our spray bottles are specially made to prevent child access. Follow these steps to unlock your spray bottle:

    1. Remove the plastic strip behind the excise label that is in front of the spray nozzle. This will rip the excise label away from the nozzle.
    2. Push in the lock button with your thumb and twist the cap to the right.
    3. Spray oil anywhere in your mouth. Cannabis oil must be swallowed to be effective.

All of our cannabis oils are made with extracted cannabis resin and odourless, coconut-derived, non-GMO, medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and cannot be smoked or vapourized.

    Safety & Legal Information

Driving after cannabis use leads to a 22% increase in the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident due to short-term negative impacts on reaction time, motor coordination, and divided attention.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada recommends that patients who receive authorization to use medical cannabis be counseled not to drive for at least:

    • 4 hours after inhalation
    • 6 hours after oral ingestion
    • 8 hours after inhalation or oral ingestion if the patient experiences euphoria

Regardless of how much time has passed, a patient should never operate a vehicle or heavy machinery or engage in any hazardous activity if impaired.

Note: These recommendations are generalized information provided to educate consumers with respect to impaired driving. However, cannabis consumers metabolize cannabis at varying rates, and factors such as newness to cannabis or mixing with alcohol will impact effects. These recommendations are guidelines only, and there is no certainty that following these recommendations will ensure that you pass roadside tests or are not impaired. At all times, if you are in doubt as to your impairment level, you should not drive or operate machinery.

Cannabis should always be stored where children and pets can’t access it, and is best preserved in a cool, dry place. Food products made with cannabis should always be clearly labelled.

It is illegal to travel outside of Canada with cannabis products, even if travelling to a country where medical cannabis is legal. This is due to a ban on cross-border transport.

Travel with medical cannabis is permitted, but only within Canada. As a medical patient, we encourage you to carry your Spectrum Therapeutics Customer Card with you for identification purposes.

    Quality Assurance

Spectrum Therapeutics offers a selection of strains that have been cold pasteurized to meet the needs of customers living with reduced immune function. This process is completely safe and is commonly used to preserve food. It is referred to as cold pasteurization because it kills bacteria without heating the substance.

Random monthly pesticide tests occur at all our sites as well as systematic pesticide testing on every product produced at newly acquired facilities and all third-party partners. The pesticide testing regime includes testing for over 96 pesticides, including myclobutanil (USP 2014).

    Programs and Insurance

We at Spectrum Therapeutics understand that everyone’s financial situation is unique, and that not all benefit plans cover medical cannabis. That’s why we’re proud to offer compassionate pricing to help our customers afford the medical cannabis they need.

Our Compassionate Pricing Program offers eligible customers a 20% discount on our full range of medical cannabis products.

    * This file does not fully conform with all applicable guidelines for accessible digital documents. For the most accessible experience, call Spectrum Customer Care at 1-855-558-9333.

Spectrum Therapeutics works directly with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) to verify coverage, arrange direct billing, and ensure your coverage is seamless and fully supported throughout the entire process. It typically takes around 4-6 weeks for the approval to be received from VAC. Spectrum Therapeutics contacts customers by phone or email when approval is received.

Veterans should submit a complete application to Spectrum Therapeutics that includes a Medical Document with a clear diagnosis, and their PVAC Health Benefit number (starts with a K or M + 7 digits). A Veteran’s Consent to Disclose form is found online or can be provided by Spectrum Therapeutics’ care team, and should also be submitted with a Veteran’s application for registration so that we can submit a request for direct billing to VAC on behalf of the patient.

VAC will cover the cost of $8.50 per gram. Spectrum Therapeutics offers cost coverage on the difference for any of our strains that exceed that limit.

You can claim your sales receipts from your medical cannabis on your income tax return, under Line 330 – Medical expenses for self, spouse or common-law partner, and your dependent children born in 1997 or later.

Medical cannabis does not currently have a drug identification number (DIN) assigned by Health Canada, which is required by most insurance plans to provide coverage for the cost. We encourage you to reach out to your insurance provider to find out more.

Note: If you are a veteran of the Canadian Military your treatment may be covered by Veterans Affairs Canada. Any costs incurred to purchase cannabis for medical purposes can be claimed on line 330 of your income tax return as an eligible medical expense.

Tokyo Smoke Luma Battery & Pods

Yes, Tokyo Smoke Luma batteries and vape pods are sold separately.

Using the Tokyo Smoke Luma vape is simple:

    1. Insert your chosen Luma vape pod. The pods are magnetic, and will click into place seamlessly. You will feel the Luma vibrate when the pod is inserted correctly.
    2. Inhale. The Luma is ready to use as soon as the pod clicks into place.

The Tokyo Smoke Luma vape pods are colour-coded according to the cannabis varietal extract they contain:

    • Yellow pods feature the sativa-dominant Tokyo Smoke Go varietal
    • Green pods feature the balanced Tokyo Smoke Equalize varietal
    • Purple pods feature the indica-dominant Tokyo Smoke Pause varietal

The colour-coding makes it easy to identify the pods at a glance.

The illuminating battery indicator, located at the base of the Tokyo Smoke Luma, shows the charge level by glowing in different colours:

    • 0-33%: Red
    • 34-66%: Orange
    • 67-90%: White

    510 Vapes

Trusting the ingredients of any vape pen is important, which is why we keep our cannabis cartridge ingredient list minimal:

    • The cartridges contain cannabis extract and added terpenes
    • Each extract contains THC, CBD, or a combination of the two depending on the cartridge purchased
    • No added vitamins, minerals, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, sugars, sweeteners, or colours

We are committed to a high standard for cannabis extracts derived without the use of carrier oils and diluents such as vitamin E acetate.

Each 510-threaded vape cartridge contains 0.42 mL of cannabis extract. The THC and CBD content of each vape is listed here:

    • Houndstooth (Red No 2) - 350 mg THC | <15 mg CBD
    • Bakerstreet (Red No 1) - 350 mg THC | <15 mg CBD
    • Penelope (Balanced) - 200 mg THC | 170 mg CBD

Bakerstreet is equivalent to Red No. 1

Houndstooth is equivalent to Red No. 2

Penelope is equivalent to Spectrum Blue

We are committed to a high standard of cannabis extracts using only cannabis distillate and added botanical terpenes. Cannabis terpenes are lost during our rigorous distillation process of the parent dried flower cultivar.  Re-introducing botanically derived compounds allows us to deliver an equivalent aroma and flavour to the product.

    1. Remove the dust cap from the mouthpiece.
    2. Connect the cannabis cartridge to a compatible 510 thread battery.
    3. For best results, pair with JUJU PowerTM rechargeable vape battery.
    4. Simply inhale from the mouthpiece to initiate your session.

Our Tweed 510 cartridges are not refillable. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to refill an empty cannabis vape cartridge as this is a potential risk to your safety and health.

You can dispose of your Tweed 510 cartridge and JUJU Power battery unit at your nearest TerraCycle drop-off location or by mail to TerraCycle. To find your nearest retail drop-off location, or to sign up to the TerraCycle program as an individual, please visit tweed.com/recycle to open an account and participate, free of charge.

Tweed 510 cartridges are covered by our existing return policy for cannabis products and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

    Tweed Vape Pens

No, the Tweed Vape Pen doesn't require charging. When the battery is fully depleted the pen can be recycled at retail locations that participate in the Tweed | TerraCycle Cannabis Vape Recycling Program. (The pen’s packaging can be recycled using your municipal recycling program.)

When your vape is empty, the device will produce less vapour. You can also check the oil fill window, located near the mouthpiece.

The Tweed Vape Pen is designed to be disposable, so cleaning may not be an issue. If necessary, you can use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to clean the mouthpiece

Our extract contains nothing more than cannabis distillate and naturally-derived terpenes.

Tweed Vape Pen packaging is widely accepted in curbside recycling programs. The pen itself can be recycled at retail locations that participate in the Tweed | TerraCycle Cannabis Vape Recycling Program.

Depending on the issue you experience, take the following steps:

Flashing light during and after inhale

The flashing light indicates a low battery. When the battery is fully depleted, the pen can be recycled at retail locations that participate in the  Tweed | TerraCycle Cannabis Vape Recycling Program.

Three flashes at inhale; no vapour

This is an indication that the vape pen is too hot or too cold to operate, or that the oil is not in contact with the heating element. Return the pen to room temperature and try again, with the mouthpiece upright.

    Five flashes; no vapour

If you encounter this issue, contact customer support at 1-833-818-9333.

    General Vape Questions

    Vapourizing Safety

There may be health risks associated with vaping that are not fully known or understood. Please refer to the following website for risks of vaping: www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/smoking-tobacco/vaping/risks.html

Patients are able to experience vapourization in two ways. One way is to use dried cannabis in a dried cannabis vapourizer like a Storz & Bickel device, which are available through the Spectrum Therapeutics website. Under the new regulations that came into effect October 17, 2019, cannabis extract vapes became a new legal format. Cannabis extract vapes contain refined cannabis extract that can be inhaled. Vapes come in pre-filled vape cartridges that require a battery base unit to use.

Inhaled methods of consumption deliver a rapid onset of effects in seconds to minutes after inhalation. Vapes are also suitable for patients who have difficulty swallowing oral formulations and are looking for a discreet and convenient option without the preparation required for dried flower inhalation.

Some provinces are reviewing available evidence and data related to cannabis vaping before making products available. At Spectrum Therapeutics we work closely with government bodies and adhere to all regulations to ensure the delivery of safe, consistent, and reliable products.
